The Iranian government has been in the spotlight lately with the visit of President Rouhani to the United States. It is the first time the President of Iran and the President of the United States have spoken on the phone since the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Prior to the President of Iran’s arrival to the United States, the Iranian government had released 11 prisoners of conscience, including two Christian women. This was a good gesture, but the problem is the Iranian judiciary continues to pursue and deal with Christians as criminals.
You know of several cases where there are Christian prisoners being held for their faith. Two of the prominent ones are Saeed Abedini and Behnam Irani. Pastor Behnam Irani has been held in prison for two years and has four more to serve. He is serving a sentence for Crimes Against National Security. The details of his crime? He was hosting Christian services in his home, leading a large church in Karaj, and he had in his possession Christian materials.
Pastor Behnam is held in prison without any access to the medical care he needs for internal bleeding and a herniated disc in his back. He also has difficulty walking.
On Saturday, September 21st, his family went to court to speak to the judge that ruled on his case and requested Brother Behnam’s pardon and release. The judge stated that he could be released if he repented and returned to Islam, otherwise he will need to serve his entire sentence.
If the Iranian regime wants to turn over a new leaf, so to speak, then they should start by releasing prisoners who are convicted for their faith and stop pursuing Christian activities as crimes against national security.
Please email the White House and ask the President to speak personally to President Rouhani about Pastor Behnam.
You can write and call the White House here.
You can also send a message to President Rouhani asking him to take action immediately.
When you email President Rouhani, speak with respect and let him know you appreciate his gesture to release 11 prisoners of conscience.
