Terry Jones, a pastor in Florida, had threatened the Iranian regime that he would burn Qurans if brother Youcef was not released. As expected, they did not release him, and on Saturday, April 28th, Mr. Jones burned multiple copies of the Quran. This does not help Youcef’s case as Iranian officials and politicians are outraged. The media has picked up on this, giving Mr. Jones a platform and causing further damage to the case.
I am deeply saddened by this. While as a Christian I differ greatly with the teachings of Islam, I believe in loving our neighbor as ourselves and loving our enemy as Christ instructed. The burning of the Quran as a statement is not a positive one. It certainly will not have a positive impact in the case of pastor Youcef. Burning a Quran is likened to going to your neighbor and spitting in his face. No Muslim is won to Christ by burning his holy book.
Please pray for protection for Youcef throughout this ordeal, that Iranian officials would not take their anger out on him.
