God Does Not Have A Son
One of the first objections that I receive from a Muslim is that God does not have a Son. This is a truth, he cannot have a son by natural conception because God is not a physical being, he is a Spirit. He could never enter into a physical relationship with a woman.
Just as the Quran teaches, the Bible shows that Jesus was born without a human father, his birth was supernatural. Mary was a virgin when she conceived and the Gospel states that the Spirit of God overshadowed Mary and created a human child within her womb.
Word and Spirit of God
The Quran states that Jesus was the Word (Imran 3:45) and Spirit of God (Nisa 4:171).
“O Mariam, Allah gives you good tidings of `a Word from Him’ whose name shall be the Messiah, Isa, the son of Mariam, highly honored in this world and the next; and he shall be one of those brought near `to Allah” (Imran 3:45)
If Jesus is “a Word from Him (God)” then what relationship does he have to God? What is your relationship to your word? It proceeds from your intellect, so it is an expression of your being. Your word is no different from you as a person.
O People given the Book(s)! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor say anything concerning Allah, but the truth; the Messiah, Eisa the son of Maryam, is purely a Noble Messenger of Allah, and His Word; which He sent towards Maryam, and a Spirit from Him; so believe in Allah and His Noble Messengers; and do not say “Three”; desist, for your own good; undoubtedly Allah is the only One Allah; Purity is to Him from begetting a child; to Him only belongs all whatever is in the heavens and all whatever is in the earth; and Allah is a Sufficient Trustee (of affairs). Nisa 4:171
Here the Quran is saying that at the time of its writing the Christians and Jews were in error concerning their doctrine. It acknowledges that Jesus is the Messiah he is the word of Allah which was sent to Maryam. Then it also tells us that Jesus is a Spirit from God. After that he is saying stop calling God a Trinity. Then after that it tells us that far be it from God to beget a Son. The context of this is that God cannot have a sexual relationship with a woman to bring a son and truly that is the case. As the Quran teaches Jesus was born without a human father.
John 1:1, 14 teaches the same about Jesus, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God…And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us…”
I ask you, what relationship does your word have to you? Your word is an expression of your thoughts and your thoughts make up who you are. What relationship does your own spirit have to you? Your spirit is what animates your body. Your actions tell us and reveal exactly who you are as a person. So who is the Word and Spirit of God? It can only be God himself.
There are not three Gods, there is no God but God, this is the clear teaching of the Bible. Notice, what the Quran commands to its followers.
Ask the People of the Book
“If you are in doubt concerning that which we have sent down to you, ask those who have been reading the Book before you.” Jonah 10:94
Mohammad was commanded to speak to those who were reading the Book before him for confirmation of the Quran’s contents. That is, he was told to consult with Christians and Jews regarding their Book. As we saw before the Quran was stating that Christians and Jews had erroneous doctrines that they taught, but never that the Book they had was perverted. Here are two more references from the Quran.
Say: “O People of the Book! Ye have no ground to stand upon unless you stand fast by the Torah, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord.” Surah 5:68
O ye unto whom the Scripture hath been given! Believe in what We have revealed confirming THAT WHICH YE POSSESS. Sura 4:47
First, it is rebuking Christians and Jews for not staying with the Bible. Then it tells us that Christians and Jews were in possession of the Holy Book at that time. So, according to modern thinkers, they expound that the Quran teaches that the Old and New Testaments we have today are perverted and the message changed. The Quran states something different. Jews and Christians had the TRUE BIBLE in their possession in the 7th Century. We now have copies of the New Testament that date back to the 200’s AD and copies of the Old Testament that date back to 150 BC. We know for a fact that the Bible we have today is the same Bible that they had back then and is in turn the very same Bible that Mohammad had access to in the 7th Century.
The Quran teaches Muslims to read and believe what is written in the Bible. Not only that, but it shows something stunning about the life and death of Jesus. Here are two references in the Quran and one in the Bible. Jesus died, was raised to life again and ascended to God.
“O Isa I will cause you to die, and will raise you up to Me, and will purify you of those who believe not. I will set your followers above the unbelievers till the Resurrection Day. Then to Me shall you return” (House of Imran 3:55).
“Peace be upon me, the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised up alive.” -Sura Mariam 19:33
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
The Quran and the Bible do have much in common, as a Muslim reading this I recommend to you just as the Quran commanded to Mohammad, read and believe the Bible.
