William Branham On Water Baptism

QUESTIONS_AND_ANSWERS_NO1  JEFF_IN 01-03-54 Morning

12 See, I think that baptism… Oh, I do say it’s essential; I wouldn’t want to say it isn’t essential. But it is essential because it’s… Every commandment of God is essential. Don’t you think so? It’s essential that we must be baptized. Jesus give this statement in St. Matthew, or St. Mark 16; He said, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel; he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” And when He was talking to Nicodemus, He said, “Except a man be born of water and Spirit he will in no wise enter the Kingdom.” It must be baptized. I believe in immersing, in the baptism, in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and to be raised again in newness of life, to walk after the commandments of God.

113 Now, the first time baptism was ever spoke of, was spoke of by John the Baptist. How many knows that to be true? All right, I’m going to lay it over here, way over here: John the Baptist. And John baptized the people in the river of Jordan, commanding them that they should repent, and get right with God, and sell their goods, and feed the poor, and the soldiers be satisfied with their money, and to get right with God. How many know that? And he baptized them in the river of Jordan, not sprinkled them, not poured them, but immersed them. If you don’t believe it, here’s the Lexicon, find out if it isn’t “baptizo,” which is “baptize, immerse, put under, bury.” Now, the first time baptism was ever spoke of, was there.
The second time baptism was ever spoke of, Jesus commissioned it, Matthew 28:19. Next time baptism was spoke of was Acts 2:38. The next time baptism was spoke of was in the 8th chapter of Acts. The next time baptism was spoke of was in the–the 10th chapter of Acts.

115 And then we come from the time where Jesus said here, “Go ye, therefore, teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and the Son, Holy Ghost.
Now, let’s straighten this Scripture out first. I’ve told you that there’s not one Scripture in the Bible that’ll contradict another. I want you to bring it to me. I’ve asked that for twenty-six years, and I haven’t found it yet. There’s no Scripture that contra… If it contradicts It, then its a man-written affair. No, sir, there’s no contradiction in the Bible.
Now, this you said, “What about that?”
Here stands Jesus saying, “Go ye, therefore, teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of Father, Son, Holy Ghost.”
And Peter turns right back around, and said, “Repent, every one of you, and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ.”
There’s your contradiction: looks like it. Now, if you’re reading with a carnal mind and not a open heart, it’ll be a contradiction. But if you’ll read It open-minded, “The Holy Spirit has hid this from the eyes of the wise and prudent,” Jesus said so, and thanked God for it, “and has revealed It to babes such as would learn.” If you got a mind, and not a selfish mind, but a willing heart to learn, the Holy Ghost will teach you these things.

270 Now, he said, “We not know whether there be any Holy Ghost.”
Then he said, “Unto what was you baptized?”
They said, “We’ve already been baptized by the man that baptized the Lord Jesus Christ. We been baptized unto John’s baptism,” same hole of water, perhaps, “the same man.”
Paul said, “That won’t work. He only baptized unto repentance, not for remission of sins.”
Now, some of you Oneness people come around and—and baptize that, wrong. You baptize that unto, for salvation. Water don’t save a man; it’s the Blood, repentance. Not through baptism to regeneration. No, sir. Regeneration comes by the Spirit. Baptism is a–is a outward expression of the inward work of regeneration that’s been done. See?

275 All right. Notice. He said, “Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?” They said…
He said, “We not know whether there be any Holy Ghost.”
He said, “How was you baptized?”
Said, “We been baptized unto John.”
He said, “John verily baptized unto repentance, unto repentance, saying that ‘you should believe on Him,’ the Lamb, the Sacrifice was to come, on the Lord Jesus Christ.” And when they heard This, they were rebaptized again in the Name of Jesus Christ. And Paul laid his hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost, and spoke in tongues and prophesied.

280 Tell me that’s not Scripture, and show me anywhere, that anybody was ever baptized any other way in the New Testament but the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Show me.
Saint Agabus and many, there were others, who was baptized on down until the time of the–of the–of the Nicene Council, and every one of them was baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ. The missionaries tilled the fields with the Name of Jesus Christ.
But when the Nicene Council come, they had to have three gods. They took down Paul… or took down Jupiter, and put up Paul. They took down Venus, and put up Mary. They had all kinds of gods, all kinds of saints and everything else, and made a triune baptism and fed it to the Protestants. And they still gulp it down.

65 “But you know the days of miracles is past; there is no such as that.” See? There you are. “Oh, I don’t believe you have to be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ.” But the Bible said you did. Now, I want some theologian to disagree with that. See? Yeah. See? It’s got to be. You say, “Well baptism don’t make any difference.” Well then, why was it written? Why did it make a difference to Paul? Why did it make a difference to all the rest of them? You’re either baptized… The Bible said, “You have a name that you live and you’re dead.” ‘Cause there’s not another name given under heaven… Why will you preach in It, pray in It, everything else, but when you come to the pool you reject It? (Uh-huh) I said to a man the other day, I said, “What, if a man…” Said, “Don’t make any difference.” I said, “If a man come to you, and then said he was baptized in the name of the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley, and the Morning Star. Would you say he’s all right? He said, “No, sir.” I said, “Would you rebaptize him?”

“Yes.” I say, “How would you baptize?” Said, “In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.” I said, “All right, now you did exactly… You place…

66 If you called those names, you did the same thing he did, when he said, ‘Rose of Sharon, Lily of the Valley, and Morning Star,’ because that’s a title; and Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is a title.” See? He said, “But Jesus said baptize in the Name.” I said, “That’s exactly what He meant do. But what is… not–not… He didn’t say, ‘call these words.’ Baptize them in the Name: Name.” (Oh, my.) I said, “Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is titles. The Name of the Father, Son… The Name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.” See? I said, “What did Peter say It Was? What did the rest of them say It was? What is It? The Lord Jesus Christ is the Name of the Father, Son, Holy Ghost.” He’s got about thirty thousand natives he has to rebaptized again now. See? All right. But that’s right. Paul said, “If an angel from heaven…” Paul told those people that wasn’t baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ (Acts 19:5), that in order to receive the Holy Ghost they had to come… Though they were shouting and praising God and doing great things, he said they had to come back and be rebaptized again in the Name of Jesus Christ, after John the Baptist had baptized them. They had to come back and be rebaptized. And he said in Galatians 1:8, “If a angel from heaven teaches any other thing than I’ve taught you, let him be accursed.” Yes, sir. So we have to stay right with that Word, every Word of It. See? Notice…

GODHEAD_EXPLAINED  BEAUMONT_TX 01-19-61 Afternoon

26 I never unchristianize no man or person for their ideas of Scripture. I base it upon if they’re saved they’re trusting Jesus Christ, whether they are Catholic, Protestant, Jew, or whatever they are. You’re saved because you’re born of Christ. But you’ve asked me a question, “Why, Brother Branham would you baptize in the name of Jesus Christ?” All right. “And why would you disregard Father, Son, and Holy Ghost?” That’s your question. And as your brother, and as a servant of Christ, I’m duty bound to answer you. All right. Now, therefore when you find out here, to make this contradiction… Now, just ten days after this, after Jesus said this, Peter had the keys to the kingdom, Matthew 16, find out “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock… build My church,” so forth. “And I give… I say thou art Peter, and I give unto thee the keys of the kingdom. Whatever you bind on earth, I’ll bind it in heaven. What you loose on earth, I’ll loose in heaven.” Now, that same man that had the keys, turned right back around ten days after Jesus said this, and said, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins.”
