William Branham On Predestination

The Teaching of William Branham On Predestination

william branham predestination
Brother William Branham was a prophet that lived from 1909 to 1965. He has been attacked and maligned, but when his teachings are truly examined they are a treasure of divine truth, opening up a wealth of understanding of the Scriptures. I have been especially blessed by the teaching of Brother William Branham on predestination. This is an article showing how he taught and what he believed in.

The subject of predestination brings us to the centuries-long debate between Calvinists and Arminians. That is the debate between God’s sovereignty and man’s free-will. If man’s free-will is able to conquer the plan of God then it is clear that God is not sovereign at all, but that he is, in fact, subject to the whims and fancies of billions of men and women upon the earth. The fact is, nothing can stop the plan of God. He is Lord of all.

Psalms 115:3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

God does not dwell in space and time and what he does is not under the authority of man. He dwells outside of time and he does exactly what he pleases.

Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

God dwells in eternity. Think of it, there was a time when God was alone, in fact, he was not even God yet because being God signifies being an object of worship. Nothing was there to worship him yet. He was the Eternal One. There was no such thing as time, space or matter. There wasn’t even nothing for something to dwell in. [A little dry humor injected]. God dwelt alone in eternity. Then he spoke and created time, space and matter. He dwells outside and apart from it. He is the sovereign controller of all time, space, and matter. It is not outside of his personal control.
When we look at the plan of salvation we understand that nothing is out of order. Even the fall of man was ordained of God for a higher purpose, that to express his full attributes to his children, that came forth from his thinking. Before an atom was created, before there was even space for that atom to occupy, God had a plan in place. He wished to express himself fully through his own Son and then express himself through that Son into a body of people on the earth called the Bride.
66 Someone said, “Well, I know I got saved, because I quit smoking.”
That wasn’t why I got saved; that wasn’t why you got saved. You got saved because God chose you before the foundation of the world to be saved. That’s the Scripture teaching. Amen. Now, you see, we begin to find out it’s not us; it’s Him (See?); He chose us.
Abraham couldn’t say, “Well, bless God, I come down from the tower of Babylon, hallelujah. That’s why I got saved.” He’d have saved the whole bunch then, if that’s the reason they done it. See, He didn’t do that.

Ephesians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. Every type of the Bible expresses the purpose of God in this. When God made Adam and Eve, first he formed Adam from the dust of the earth. Then out of his side, God made Eve. In Ephesians 1:4 we see the same. The Eternal God chose the Bride in Christ before even any atom was created. Every individual that would experience full redemption in history would be chosen at that time. Therefore, even in eternity, God had a specific plan for every individual member that would make up the body of Christ. Brother Branham had a marvelous and humble way of expressing these beautiful truths. Let’s look more closely at his teaching.
E-19 Now, if you are in Christ you are Abraham’s seed. ‘Cause the promise of Isaac, and through Isaac come Christ, through Christ all nations, made Abraham the father of all the nations. And then if you be in Christ, you become Abraham’s seed. And you’re heirs with Abraham.
And the promise was made to Abraham, not because he was a great man, or not because that he was a–a religious man. But it was by God’s foreknowledge; by election He chose Abraham. God chose you. You never chose God; God chose you. Jesus said, “No man can come to Me except My Father draws him first.”
So many people say, “Oh, I sought God, I sought God.” That’s a mistake. You don’t seek God; God seeks you.

John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

It is interesting to note as we read John 6:44 that the word draw is from the Greek word “helko” which literally means “to drag”. This is our condition when we are born. By nature, we are “children of wrath” as Ephesians 2:3 states. That is, the elect are born in the same condition as those who are reprobates. Therefore, it is necessary for God to drag us to salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.
E-30 Now, who could be saved by the law? No one could be saved by the law. The law didn’t come to save us. The law was to magnify our sins, to point them out to us. And listen, to you legalist believers, I want to ask you something: There’s not one thing you can do to be saved in yourself. No sir. You are saved by grace and that alone, and you have nothing to do with it. God chose you in Christ before the foundation of the world. That’s right.
There’s not one thing you can do to merit. So you keep all the commandments you want to, join all the churches you want to, you’re still lost. You might know your catechism, say Hail Mary’s. You might know the Apostles Creed, the Doxology; you might know all the doctrine of the Bible. But to know the Bible is not Life. To know the church creed is not Life. But to know Him is Life. Alone to know Him… You might be baptized this way, that way, this way, that way, or sprinkled, poured, whatever it may be; you’re still lost until you know Him. To know Him is Life. The church in its condition…

Eternal Security

Brother William Branham clearly taught eternal security. He clearly said that it is not an eternal security that leads a person to confess salvation while living ungodly, but an eternal security that involves the continual work of God in a person’s life. God is literally upholding us in faith. It is ultimately perseverance in faith that we are looking at and not merely eternal security. It is that God keeps us in faith as we go along life’s journey. It is not that we merely will ultimately be saved, but that we persevere in faith. Look what Jesus says.

John 10:28-30 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and my Father are one.

It isn’t that we go out of His hands then back in, then out again and then back in. He keeps us in His hand, that is, we are secure in Him. The omnipotent God upholds us in faith. If God is both sovereign and omnipotent we understand that nothing can take us away from salvation in Christ. Not even our own sin can remove us from salvation. God will ensure our ultimate salvation.
72 Another thing a seal signifies is ownership. See? The seal has a mark on it, shows ownership. When you are bought by the Blood of Jesus Christ and sealed by the Holy Ghost, you no longer belong to the world or anything pertaining to the world. You are owned by God.
And another thing is: a seal is a security. Seal means you are secured. Now, you that don’t believe in eternal security, I don’t know, but now… But a seal signifies security to its destination. Woe unto that guy that would try to break that seal. And the Holy Spirit Seal cannot be broken. You all have heard me say that people said, “The devil made me do this.” No, no, the devil didn’t do it. You just wasn’t sealed in, so then (You see?), ’cause when you’re sealed in, he’s sealed out. See?

Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

God predestined us to be in the image of Jesus Christ, ultimately in a glorified, immortal body. This speaks of our destiny being decreed and ordained before we ever reach it. This shows that we will definitely perservere in faith and godliness.

Total Depravity of Man

We are born in sin and shaped in iniquity, “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) We are so corrupted in the sight of God that he concludes the following about us.

Romans 3:9-19 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Here is a list of the condition of ALL of mankind.

  1. Under sin
  2. None righteous
  3. None understand God
  4. None seek God
  5. Gone out of the way
  6. Unprofitable
  7. None do good
  8. Throat is an open sepulchre
  9. All have deceived people
  10. Poison of asps in our lips
  11. Mouths full of cursing and bitterness
  12. Feet swift to shed blood
  13. Destruction and misery in our ways
  14. Do not know the way of peace
  15. no fear of God
  16. all the world is guilty before God

We are totally unable to save ourselves or even able to seek after God. Therefore, God made a way of salvation for us and as we read before in Romans 8:30 he calls us unto himself by dragging us to Christ and then he justifies us. It is necessary because of our hearts condition. Let’s look at what Brother Branham teaches us.
« 55 † First, we reckon ourselves sinners and worthy of condemnation. And we are all born in sin and shaped in iniquity; there’s not a sound parcel of us. Our minds are bad; our soul is corruptible; our constant thinking is evil, every imaginary thought of a man’s mind is evil, a sinner; and also that our body is weak; our spirit is no good; and we’re just full of corruption. And how could one corruptible thing bring another good thing out of a corruptible? Let me say this, that in Job, 14th chapter he said, “Seeing that man is born of a woman, is full of sorrow and trouble, yet he cometh forth like a flower, he fadeth away.” And on, as the prophet goes on speaking, he said, “Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.” You stick your bucket down into the well and pull out a bucket of water, and it’s stagnant, it stinks; you look in it, and it’s muddy, and little worms is in that water; there’s no way at all to put your bucket back and get a clean bucket. The whole well is contaminated. And the whole soul, mind, and body of man is contaminated with sin, and born in sin, physically, shaped in iniquity, and come to the world speaking lies, so that his own soul is contaminated: nothing good. One cannot redeem the other, because it’s all wrong. And you can’t take a bucketful of water here that’s contaminated, and another bucketful that’s contaminated and mix them together; you’ve got more contamination. There’s no purification to it.
We are totally corrupted and completely in need of God to do the whole work of salvation for us and in us.

A Part of God’s Own Life by Election

Ephesians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

If God chose us before the world began it means that he had us in his mind. We understand that the thoughts of God are not decision made in haste. The thoughts of God are eternal because God is eternal. They never began and will never end. Thus we can conclude that those that were chosen before the foundation of the world were eternal in the mind of God. No, they did not exist eternally as persons who were distinct from God, but they were in his thoughts. These thoughts of God are also called “children of God.” Adam was a son of God and he was to bring forth this same life into the world through the bedding ground of his wife Eve. Just as you and I carry the genetics of our parents, Adam carried the genetics of his Father, God. This genetic nature was to be passed on to his children. Through the fall and the Serpent sowing the seed of discrepancy in the woman and producing Cain, this genetic was corrupted. Now, it is only through election that the genes of God are passed on to the human race.
18 There was a seed laying there, a predestinated seed that was in the–is God’s thought before the foundation of the world. There’s only one form of Eternal Life. If you’ve got Eternal Life then you, yourself, was in God’s thinking before the world was created. You’re an attribute of His thinking, ’cause eternal never did begin, or never can end. You’re a part of God’s economy always. It’s just reflecting. It’s becoming… Now, you’ve got one more picture to develop, that’s death. Then the negative becomes positive. Then you’re in the Bride, and with Christ. As He taught, like husband and wife today, so God, Christ and the church will be the same.
69 Now, if we are the sons of God, His attributes… Which you are an attribute of your father, not your mother; your father. The germ lays in the father. See? And now. your mother was an incubator that bear you, bear the seed of your father. See? And the earth, in flesh, is also the incubator that bears the seed of God. See, just exactly. Not the world, how great the world is; it’s how great the God that made it. See, see? Now, if you are a son and daughter of God, then you were in God at the beginning. You’re His attribute. If you wasn’t there then, then you never was or never will be. ‘Cause, I cannot bear, from my loins, the son of this man here or that man there, I can only bear my own sons, and they would bear my likeness. Hallelujah. You see it? Sons and daughters was in God at the beginning. Now, look. You’ve got Eternal Life, you say. We believe it, that we got Eternal Life. Well, there’s only one form of Eternal Life, and that’s God. That’s the only thing that is eternal, is God. Then if you’ve got Eternal Life, that Life that’s in you always was, and you were in the loins of God before there even was a world. And when the Word Itself…

Salvation is of the Lord

Jonah 2:9  But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

From start to finish salvation is of the Lord. It is entirely through grace. It is not based upon our decision. It is based on the will and work of the Lord.

Philippians 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

I didn’t start the work in me and neither will I finish it. God, through his sovereign grace, both started and will finish his work. God does not start a work and then leave it half way through. As though he said, “well, I started working on this old boy, but man, he was really stubborn, so I gave up.” He created and has the power to subdue all things to himself.

Philippians 3:21  Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

God is omnipotent and will save us to the uttermost.

32 Now, here you are Arminian teachers, my brethren, I don’t mean to rub this in now. I want you just to watch this real close, to show you that it’s not by works, it’s by grace, by election, by foreknowledge. It’s God that does the saving. You have nothing to do with it. “Not him that willeth or him that runneth, but it’s God that showeth mercy.” Notice, “Abraham, come up here on the side of the hill. Now, you’ve watched the birds off of this… While He piled them together.” Said, “You’ve watched the birds off of them, and the sun is going down now.” And the Bible said, “A deep sleep fell on Abraham.”
“Now, you haven’t got nothing to do with it, Abraham. I’m just going to shut you out, show you, it’s not what you can do or what you want. It’s Me doing it. I’m doing the saving.” Saved him when he started, told him He’d come to him in an old age. He’d save his seed after him. God did it by sovereign grace. So what you scared about?

The issue of Calvinism and Arminianism will never be solved for some people, but to the Bride of Christ, the teaching of William Branham on predestination has made it clear. It has been a scriptural revelation that has brought such peace and joy that it is beyond words. God has chosen us, in Christ, before the foundation of the world. By his perfect and sovereign foreordained plan he predestined us to be conformed to the image of his Son, ultimately in an immortal body. We are born in sin and shaped in iniquity, completely incapable of any good, completely incapable of even seeking after God. But God through his sovereign plan seeks us through the work of his Spirit, both in our soul and through the preaching of the Word. Then he baptizes us in his Spirit and gives us a new nature. Then from the time we are born again until the day we either die or receive a body change he keeps us in faith, growing more and more like the Lord Jesus Christ.
