Does the Scripture speak at all about any need to memorize it? Should we as Christians in this modern age memorize portions of the Bible?
In our day and age of instant gratification, instant communication, and instant access to everything, we have refused to slow down in order to meditate upon and memorize Scripture. It seems to be a lost art. But this is an important thing for every believer.
Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
How do we hide the word in our heart? I can assure you it is not through a surgical procedure. Instead, it is through meditation and memorization. Psalm 1 tells us that the righteous man meditates on the law day and night. Without memorization this would be almost impossible in the day of large scrolls. We are not living in the day of large scrolls anymore, but we are living in an hour when Satan attacks us on every hand. This is one of the great needs for memorization of key Scriptures. We need them in the recesses of our heart and mind in order to recall them in an instant to do battle against the devil. Even the Lord Jesus memorized Scripture in order to do battle against Satan in the wilderness.
It is not enough to merely memorize Scripture to do battle against Satan, but first we need to have the Holy Spirit baptism within us. It is the heart that is filled with the Holy Ghost and has Scripture hidden within it that does battle with and defeats the devil. How can we memorize Scripture?
It is quite simple and even my children practice this in our homeschool. You take the verses you want to memorize and recite them out loud five times a day. You can do that with a new section of verses each week. If you want to memorize entire chapters, then take portions of it and memorize it week by week. Go back to those places you have memorized in order to refresh your memory. For me personally, I first memorized the most important doctrinal scriptures regarding evangelistic subjects, message doctrines, and personal struggles to be able to do battle against the devil. As a missionary that needs to recall many subjects in an instant, this has been invaluable to me in my ministry, but it is also invaluable to me in my personal life as I fight the daily battles against the devil.
