Malachi 4:5-6 speaks of the coming of Elijah the prophet. It speaks of his coming to do two separate things.
1. turn the hearts of the fathers to the children
2. turn the hearts of the children to their fathers
Luke 1:17 says that John the Baptist will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children. It does not mention part 2 at all. So, there is a fulfillment to come at the end-time. There are many that believe this. They in turn believe that part 2 is fulfilled by one of the two witnesses in Revelation. This is not possible and I want to show you why.
And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
(Malachi 4:6)
I want to emphasize “LEST I COME AND SMITE THE EARTH WITH A CURSE.” This Elijah is coming to prevent God’s judgement.
Notice the Elijah in Revelation 11.
“These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to SMITE THE EARTH with all plagues, as often as they will.” (Revelation 11:6)
So the Elijah of Malachi 4 is coming to prevent the earth from being SMITTEN WITH A CURSE. The Elijah of Revelation 11 is SMITING THE EARTH.
1. Malachi 4 “LEST I SMITE THE EARTH WITH A CURSE.” – Grace Age
2. Revelation 11 “THESE HAVE POWER TO…SMITE THE EARTH.” -Tribulation Period
Therefore, the Elijah of Malachi 4 must come during the age of grace. Malachi 4 is fulfilled before the two witnesses appear on the scene in Revelation 11 during the tribulation period.
