Paul teaches us in Romans 7:13-25 that unconverted people in their mind, conscience and will desire to do good, but are slaves to the sinful nature. Unconverted people want to do good, but end up doing evil because of the nature that is in us all when we are born. Who will deliver us from this nature that causes us to sin? Thanks be to God that we can be delivered from it through our Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the cross for our sins. What the law could not do in that it was weak because of our sinful flesh, God did for us by sending his Son (Romans 8:3) in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin to condemn sin in our flesh. That is, to destroy the effects of sin on all who believe that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead.
The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:2) has made us free from this sinful nature and tendencies in us that cause us to disobey God’s Law and condemn us to death and hell.
There is victory and power to overcome sin in Jesus Christ. Prior to our conversion we are bound to sin as slaves are bound to their master. After conversion we still sin, but our will is made free to have the power to overcome and choose that which is pleasing God through the Spirit.
