How Can I Overcome? Part 2

In this post I want to see what Jesus showed us was the secret to overcoming the temptations of the devil.

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them. And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus was at his low point mentally and physically at this stage after fasting for forty days and forty nights. This is when the devil came to him to tempt him away from God’s purpose for his life.

Notice, first, Jesus does not utilize any power other than what we have access to. Sometimes we mistake God’s power for the ability to command certain things be done or to just immediately destroy the work of Satan. God does not always work in this manner. However, you must understand, Jesus in fact did respond with the greatest power in the universe, the word of God. He took the written words of the prophets of God and verbally spoke them to Satan to stop him. Nevertheless, the works of the devil continued to come at the Lord Jesus. Then Satan sees the response and the line of defense that Jesus took. He could have thought, “OK, Jesus, you want to give me scripture for your response, I know exactly what to do here with your types.” He then proceeded to give him a situation and apply scripture to it. This is the greatest trick that Satan will use against Christians, he will quote scripture to you and bring it to your mind in order to get you to go away from the will of God. Therefore, it is absolutely critical that you know and understand scripture according to the revelation that the Holy Spirit gives. That is, you must understand it in the full context and properly place it according to all of scripture. The word of God must not merely be known, but it must be hidden in your heart, memorized and meditated upon.

The last attack of Satan upon the Lord Jesus is to simply offer him the easy way out. Jesus knew that he would be see all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them, but it had to come by the will of God, first he had to suffer and purchase by his blood those who are to be redeemed and then he would redeem the earth. First, he had to suffer for us and then he would later receive the kingdom.

To summarize;

  1. Jesus responded to the temptations of the devil with the most powerful tool at his disposition, the Scriptures.
  2. Jesus had the scripture hidden in his heart after memorizing and meditating upon it so that he could rightly place the word of God in response to the devil using the word deceptively.
  3. Jesus submitted himself to the will of God knowing that even though he would suffer there was JOY that was set before him, he would receive the kingdoms of this world as his inheritance.
