How can I overcome the devil and sin and have victory? In this short study over several posts I want to give you some practical steps to do just this. This is not only for your sake, but for mine as well. I definitely need more victory and more overcoming power in my life. All of us have things that are in our lives that get us down and cause us to question ourselves. Then it takes away joy and peace that God desires for us to have.
Victory isn’t simply a matter of the power of God’s Spirit coming upon you and then you just whistle on through life and have no problems or issues. Victory comes from going through battles. If there is no battle then there is no victory. As a born again Christian demons are working in many ways to tempt us to sin and turn away from Christ. Some people say, ‘I am constantly tempted. There is something wrong with me.” That is the opposite of the truth, the reality of temptation is this, if you are not tempted then something is wrong because Satan is working to tempt true believers away from walking with God in truth.
The verse that start this article states that our faith is the victory that overcomes the world. How does our faith overcome the world? It is not merely our faith that overcomes the world, but what God accomplishes within our soul that does this. Faith works mighty things according to Hebrews 11. Faith in Jesus Christ leads us to a changed or transformed nature and through this we are able to overcome the world. Without being born of the Spirit we are “the world” and will continue to live worldly following sexual pleasures, going to the bar and getting drunk, gambling, cursing and doing every evil work our wicked hearts desire.
When God reaches down within our very being and changes us to be a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) in Christ Jesus we have within ourselves the Holy Spirit and the means to overcome the world. However, it takes more than this, for this is just the start and one of the tools to overcome. Having tools to do a job is very important and in most cases essential, but unless you know how to properly use a tool you can do more damage than good.
In our next study we’ll look at how Jesus overcame the tempter and what secrets it reveals for our overcoming.
